About

Located in the heart of Southport, a seaside town in the north-west of England, the Southport War Memorial is a significant tourist attraction for history enthusiasts and those interested in paying tribute to the fallen soldiers of World War I and World War II.

The Southport War Memorial was built in 1923, to commemorate the 723 soldiers from Southport who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was designed by local architect and sculptor Ernest Prestwich, and it is a striking piece of art that stands tall in the town's Lord Street gardens.

The structure itself is an impressive 60ft high, with a bronze figure of Victory at its peak, holding a wreath in her outstretched arms. At the base of the monument are four bronze panels, which depict scenes of war, including soldiers going into battle, the wounded being treated, and the return of the victorious soldiers.

The memorial underwent renovations in 2014 to ensure it remains a safe and lasting tribute for future generations. The new design has also made the monument more accessible to tourists with disabilities. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the memorial, admiring its design and paying respects to the soldiers who lost their lives.

Apart from being a memorial site, the Southport War Memorial is also surrounded by beautiful gardens, offering a serene and peaceful environment for visitors. The gardens are well-maintained, with carefully manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and well-placed benches for visitors to sit and reflect.
