This beautiful castle situated in Lasswade, just outside Edinburgh, provides an idyllic setting for writers to escape from their busy lives and concentrate on their work in a tranquil environment.

The castle was built in the early 17th century and has been owned by the same family for generations. The estate covers around 50 acres of woodland and gardens, with the castle itself perched on a cliff overlooking the River North Esk. The castle was converted into a writers' retreat in the 1980s by its current owner, the late Drue Heinz, an American philanthropist and patron of the arts.

Hawthornden Castle Writers' Retreat is open to published writers of fiction, poetry, and drama, as well as translators and biographers. The organization offers residencies of up to four weeks, during which writers can live in the castle's comfortable accommodations and have their meals prepared by the castle's chef.

The castle has a number of cozy writing rooms, each with its own fireplace and views of the surrounding countryside. Writers are encouraged to spend as much time as possible writing, but there is also time for walks in the woods or along the river, and for socializing with other writers at mealtimes.

For tourists who are interested in literature, Hawthornden Castle Writers' Retreat is a unique and fascinating destination. Visitors can take guided tours of the castle and grounds, and learn about the history of the castle and its transformation into a writers' retreat. The castle also hosts occasional literary events, such as readings and workshops, which are open to the public.

Even if you are not a writer, the castle and its surroundings are a beautiful place to visit. The castle's gardens are well-tended and full of colorful flowers and plants, and the woodland walks offer stunning views of the river and the surrounding hills. The castle is also conveniently located near Edinburgh, which is a vibrant city full of history, culture, and attractions.
